Insuring that iPads are safe, secure, and…not lost

The sheer amount of planning that goes into protecting these expensive iPads is amazing. It is a collaboration of school authorities, district administrators, and local law enforcement that all protect this investment of the future. The work of these people ensures that every iPad, whether lost or stolen, returns back to their rightful owners.

“iCloud/Find my iPad tracking enables us to find lost iPads,” says Officer Joe Goldbeck, the School Resource Officer of the Hoffman Police Department. This feature along with the school board’s immense planning allows the school to track missing iPads.

Insurance protects iPads as well. If an iPad is stolen from a student’s bag and that student doesn’t have insurance, he or she “is still charged with the amount the iPad costs because it is part of the implications of not having insurance,” said Brigid Tileston, administrator.

Having insurance is beneficial for students as it protects in cases of theft or mechanical failure.

“About 50-55 students come into my office monthly with lost or stolen iPad claims. There is a 98% chance that I will find it, and usually it’s the fact that the students forget where they put it,” said Golbeck.

Golbeck works alongside the administrators to prevent this theft of this expensive investment.

“If an iPad should ever be stolen, and is not recovered, there is a process that the school goes through. We report it to the police, then the iPad is added to a state police database where our information about the iPad is recorded. If any iPad comes through matching the database then it is returned,” said Goldbeck.

This complicated process requires the full cooperation between the school and the state, and this is why most iPads are found. These are the same processes that are put into place if it is suspected an iPad is placed on the black market.

“If someone should ever even be considering stealing an iPad, remember there are severe consequences like the fines, school consequences, and being charged with a felony for stolen property. So, don’t steal!” said Goldbeck.

‘In the end it is the students’ responsibility to keep their iPads safe, and in the case that it does get lost or stolen it is also their responsibility to make sure they report it so that the right actions can be taken quickly,” says Tilston.

Remember to keep your iPad safe and to follow all the rules because you don’t want to end up losing your iPad , or even having it stolen. If anything does occur you can talk to Officer Goldbeck; his office is located in the student services office.
