HEHS Homecoming to celebrate past, present via theme “Retro Rewind”
September 14, 2017
Get ready to groove to the beat of the greatest event of the school year: Homecoming 2017. The theme this year makes this year’s Homecoming event more unique and special.
“Retro Rewind” is HEHS 2017’s Homecoming theme. Student Council, along with Sponsor Ryan Brown, chose this theme at the end of last school year. They had some inspiration in choosing the theme. It turns out some Hawk alumni are coming back to reminisce their memories in the school.
“We chose this theme because at the Homecoming game, they will be three different classes here: class reunions of 1977, 1987, and 1997. So we decided to have a theme that revolved around that,” Brown said.
Having to prepare an event for more than a 1000 people is a hard job to do and a responsibility to fulfill. Luckily, Brown has had extra help from Student Council.
“As president (of Student Council) I’m second in charge,” said Declan Rustay. “Mr. Brown comes up with all the ideas, but if he needs help I’m the person he goes to.”
Student Council and Brown have been working on the preparations since last year. From creating designs to picking out the Homecoming Court nominees, they have been putting their time into it to make sure that everything would turn out great.
“I’m getting ready by staying after school and/or coming in early to make sure that we have all the decorations done for the dance,” said Rustay.
Homecoming is one of the most valuable events for the Hawks, yet some are not informed as much as others are . To get more students involved, Student Council does its best to spread the word.
The signage - pictures of HoCo Court nominees and morning announcements - is the primary way Student Council publicizes the events.
“The student council Twitter page will be tweeting out things about the events and dance starting next week. I’ll also be helping by tweeting things from my personal Twitter to get the word out,” Rustay said.
Student Council has some expectations for the students who either choose to get involved in Homecoming or not.
“We hope that [students] would get involved because it is one of the larger events of the school year. There really is not anything that is new, so we would hope that the reputation of what Homecoming has been would get people involved,” said Rustay. “I honestly think this one will be the best one yet!. It’s a theme that I’ve never seen before and I’m really excited to see how all the decorations turn out.”
Students, too, have high hopes for Homecoming since some Hawks will experience the events and dance for the first and/or last time.
“I think it would be fun meeting new people in one place and having a good time,” said Ivo Dimov, freshman. ”I was nervous at first but not anymore because I didn’t know what to expect especially because I’m a freshman.”
Seniors have a different perspective on Homecoming this year as their time as Hawks winds down.
“Since it’s my last year in Hoffman, I want to expect something very different from the previous years. I want it to be better than last year,” said Miko Reynaldo, senior. “I feel mixed emotions, and I don’t know why.”
“For me, I feel happy and excited because it’s my last year, but at the same time, it’s going to be emotional because I’ll miss the Hoffman spirit and [school-related] events,” said Dana Ong, senior.
More information about Homecoming, will be shared at the HoCo Kick-Off Assembly Friday, Sept. 15 at 2:00 p.m. In the meantime, check out HEHS’ Twitter @hehsStuCo and @HoffmanBlueCrew for more details.
