For Hoffman Estates High School senior Alicia Fuentes, being part of the homecoming court would be more than a recognition. It would reflect her involvement, energy and commitment to the HEHS community.
Fuentes has been active throughout her time at Hoffman. She participated in basketball, flag football, lacrosse and Palms. She also joined PA and volunteered with Special Olympics.
Of all her activities, Fuentes said flag football had the greatest impact.
“We were all just like one unit as a team,” she said. “We came together not just on the field, but off the field too. That really helped me grow as a person.”
Fuentes said being a student at Hoffman taught her important lessons about responsibility and maturity.
“You’re still a kid, but you also need to act like a young adult,” Fuentes said. “Going to class, being on time, holding yourself accountable — it gets you ready for the real world.”
When asked about her favorite memory, Fuentes pointed to Friday night traditions.
“I’d say going to football games with my friends,” she said. “Just being with them, having fun and making those memories.”
She also carries with her advice she says she will never forget. “Don’t take things for granted,” Fuentes said. “Use your time in high school wisely, because it really does go by fast.”
Looking ahead, Fuentes hopes people remember her as loud, outgoing and involved.
Her motivation to stay active at Hoffman comes from family and a desire to make the most of her time.
“My sisters went here and my mom works here, so Hoffman has always been part of my life,” Fuentes said. “If you want your high school years to be fun, you need to pitch in and involve yourself. You can’t be an outcast, you have to be part of it.”
