The smack of the yellow ball bouncing off the racket, and then flying over the net. The sounds of the shoes scratching against the court and cheers being thrown.
School has only been in session for about a month, but the members of Girls tennis are up and running.
“I enjoy the environment and being able to be a part of something,” said Mia Alvarez-Aburto, sophomore.
Girls tennis is a fall sport offered at HEHS and perfect for those who want to try a new sport and for returning players.
“I love working with all kinds of players whether it’s a brand new player who’s never picked up a racket before to the most experienced player. I feel like I can help them maximize their potential,” said Edgar Ramirez, varsity coach.
Inspiration stems from many factors, such as an older sibling or just the want to try something new.
”I had a tennis racket at home and thought, ‘I should really try tennis,’” said Devanshi Rindani, sophomore.
Tennis gives the opportunity to connect with others outside a normal school environment. Members have shared they made many friends over the course of the past month and past seasons due to tennis.
To coach William Wallace, his favorite part about coaching is, “Seeing the kids in a different environment other than the classroom and just connecting with them there.”
Girls tennis is a competitive sport, but the challenge gives rise to a good learning environment. To a new tennis player, the idea of competing in a match is daunting but the support from other players is what makes a team.
”Games and matches are fun because you can learn what you’re missing and what you can improve,” said Enji Sevjid, junior.
To many of the girls, even after just one month or season of doing tennis, there’s been a rewarding impact for them.
“Tennis has helped me learn what it’s like to be part of a team, it also helped me improve my communication skills and confidence!” said Ainsley Mcllrath, sophomore.
