“Music is the universal language of mankind.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, famous American poet

The Hoffman Estates High School Symphony Orchestra witnessed firsthand the truth in that statement just recently on an exchange rehearsal/performance with York Community High School and in an orchestra performance/clinic at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For some in the diverse orchestra of students ranging from freshmen to seniors, the trip may have been one of many music related trips, but for others his or her first.

Music is a way for people of all races, cultures, beliefs, to join together. It is a way to connect with people outside your usual everyday peers.

“York was interesting because it was just a completely different school! I enjoyed being able to play music and hang out with such skilled musicians and friendly people,” said Marielle Lugo, senior, of HEHS Symphony Orchestra. “It’s cool to have two complete strangers bond, especially so effortlessly as through music.”

This was Lugo’s second exchange performance and clinic.

The importance of music is not recognized in many places. Schools stress good grades and high standardized test scores. That, however, is being changed. Music now is recognized as a core subject with the passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act.

Many people engage in musical endeavors as children; however, there are many who never have the opportunity. District 211 offers the possibilities of music.

“Meeting students from other D211 schools [at D211 Honors Orchestra] was an interesting experience,” said CJ Dimacali, HEHS Symphonic Winds member. “I found it intriguing how different environments and different teachers made such an impact in creating a diverse pool of students for the orchestra.”

Music brings together students throughout the district when most other activities compete for awards and titles. Music is something special in education.
