The 2024 United States Presidential Election took place on November 5, 2024, sparking curiosity among Hoffman Estates High School students about American politics. Many students expressed a newfound interest in understanding policies and candidates’ stances, particularly as they near voting age.
“Getting closer to the age of vote made me want to learn more about American politics, getting to know all of the policies and stances the candidates wanted to take was important to me,” said Aesha Patel, Senior.
Politics have long been a polarizing topic, often avoided in public spaces. However, students like Senior Sherry Alao emphasized the importance of staying informed.
“I think it’s so important to stay educated. With the media and peer pressure of politics, it’s super important to have your own opinions on these issues that aren’t influenced by outside sources,” she said.
The election has also highlighted the importance of community involvement as a pathway to understanding politics. Rahi Patel, senior, explained that engaging with the community fosters empathy and awareness of others’ experiences. “If you can be around those who have less than you, it’s easy to understand what policies and politicians will directly help those people,” said Patel.
To further encourage civic engagement, Hoffman students participated in a mock election organized by the social studies department. This activity allowed students under the legal voting age to experience a simulated election process. Senior Vanshika Mergu found the experience rewarding.
“It was nice to have the opportunity to vote, and being able to see the results really opened my eyes to what my classmates truly thought. It started a conversation of politics not only within my class but with my other peers in the school as well,” she said.
Through increased political discussions, community involvement, and mock voting experiences, HEHS students are preparing to engage thoughtfully in American democracy.
