Badminton assistant varsity coach brings professional experience to the court

The HEHS girl’s badminton team has a new assistant varsity coach, Coach Briese. In order to get to know her, Hawkeye View interviewed her about her badminton background as well as her expectations for the season.

Q: How long have you been playing badminton?
A: I’ve been playing for 10 years, since my freshman year.

Q: What is your experience as a coach?
A: I coached at Conant last spring and in the summer. I was the JV coach there, and during the summer I ran the camp.

Q: What is your favorite part of playing badminton?
A: The feeling after you hit the perfect smash.

Q: What is something that you’re looking forward to about this coming season as a badminton coach for Hoffman?
A: I’m looking forward to beating my former team, Conant. I also look forward to going to state. I feel very confident that we’ll have students go to state this year.

Q: How long have you been playing badminton professionally?
A: For four years total. I played for USAB (The United States Association of Badminton).

Q: Do you like playing singles or doubles?
A: Singles

Q: What are your expectations for this season?
A: I want four state qualifiers; that’d be awesome!

Q: What have you noticed about the badminton players throughout open gym?
A: Everyone is really nice and there are a lot of people trying out for badminton. I was surprised at the amount of freshmen who have come out to open gym. It’s nice!
