Students in Healthcare Club discuss medical career opportunities, real-world health issues

Abby Mohan (’15) was determined to create a club that would give students the opportunity to have a place to go to discuss medical issues. This was when she founded the Healthcare club.

“It was a lot of work, but it was worth it,” said Mohan. Mohan put a ton of effort into creating this club last year. She had to get 25 people to sign a petition and also had to talk to Josh Schumacher, assistant principal.

This may not have been an easy task, but she not only accomplished it but also successfully continues to run the club this year.

Helen Henderson, the college and career advisor and Health Club sponsor, was interested in supporting this club because she thought “if students were introduced to these careers at an earlier age, it would broaden their horizons on what they might be able to do.”

“There are many fields that you don’t know exist unless we explore them,” Henderson continued.

Tasheen Zaidi (‘16) thinks this club gives her an insight into the careers in the healthcare field. The club also has helped students determine what career treks might be interesting to them. Zaidi said she enjoyed a hospital field trip earlier this year because it exposed her to various career opportunities in the health field.

“I like this club because I get to learn facts about daily life and, overall, it has taught me a lot,” said Francia Morales (‘16).

This year the club’s goals were to become publicized, so more students get involved.

If you know that you are interested in or want to go into the medical field, but you don’t know what you want to be, then come to the meetings every first Thursday of the month to learn more.

This club provides knowledge about the variety of medical careers out there and hopefully will guide students in the right direction. Not only do club members talk about careers, but they are going to help the school learn more facts about topics such as cancers, drugs, smoking, etc.

The club delivers a diverse platform of activities for students to gain awareness, develop relevant skill-sets and build successful careers in the healthcare industry; it strives to provide a forum for students interested in healthcare topics and career paths.

Through professional and social events, panel discussions, and leadership series, the club aims to provide support and networking opportunities for students to help further dreams of becoming part of the healthcare communities throughout the world.

The club plans to continue informing the school about health-related issues by putting up posters of facts on a new topic each month. Additionally, the club is looking at volunteer opportunities. Club members are planning to volunteer at Feed my Starving Children in May. If you have interest in joining the club now or in the future, see Mrs. Henderson in the CRC.
