Sci Fi club encourages members to “accept your inner nerd”

Sci Fi club: a place where nerds come together to share their passions right under the roof of Hoffman Estates High School.

“Sci Fi club’s a place where we watch great Sci Fi TV shows together and share our geekiness,” said Noelle Davis, a senior in club.

Not only does Sci Fi club cater to fans of the genre but also fans of other genres.

Tayyibah Ahmed is a senior in Sci Fi club who likes it for its multifaceted appeal.

“Previously, I’d never been a huge fan of Sci Fi, but this club helped me appreciate it. We’re not extreme Sci Fi nerds; we watch mysteries also. So if you’re a fan of mysteries, you should join,” said Ahmed.

Interestingly enough, a club that has such a universality does not hold a large amount of regular members. “It currently has around 7 members that really enjoy the Sci-Fi genre. We really need more members to join; it’ll make it much more fun,” said Ahmed.

Maybe it’s the shame that “nerds” feels when expressing their interests that limits membership. “Don’t be afraid to share your geekiness. We’re all a little geeky. Accept your inner nerd,” said Davis.

Regardless of membership, current members appreciate the club for what it is. “I really like getting to catch up on shows that I’ve been meaning to watch with awesome people. I’m really excited to start watching Firefly next,” said Davis.

Davis would love to see more people attend these club meetings. “I wish more people were there to share the awesomeness with,” said Davis.

Ahmed would love to see more people contribute to the club. “One thing we seriously need to change is the lack of food. Everyone is starving after school so when we sit to watch the show, people are mostly busy complaining about how hungry they are,” she said.

“We could change this by taking it upon ourselves to bring food in on Tuesdays because I don’t think Sci Fi club gets funding from the school,” Ahmed continued.

Sci-Fi club meets every Tuesday after school. “I also like the shows we watch every Tuesday because they’re quite interesting. We usually leave off on a cliffhanger, so that makes me anticipate Tuesday’s,” said Ahmed.
