Persistence, passion at the heart of this viola player’s performance

Esmeralda Gutierrez showcases her unique talent at this year’s Variety Show.

One Variety Show contestant we have to look forward to at this week’s Variety Show is Esmeralda Gutierrez. If you don’t know her already, she is a sophomore who plays volleyball, plays the viola, and has numerous friends.

Around 6th grade, she had started participating in talent shows. She loves the audience, and she loves showcasing her talent. That confidence and passion for performing has brought her here to HEHS’ VShow.

What she brings to the Variety Show is not only different but exciting. Before she had thought that the viola was the exact same as the violin, so she decided to learn how to play it. She came to the realization that it is unique in its own way. It is bigger and the strings are lower, which produces a rich, deep sound that resonates in the listener’s ears. She was intrigued and has been playing the instrument for five years in school.

She has been trying to keep a constant schedule with practicing the viola. Now she is ready to play her exciting and originally upbeat piece to her friends, family, and fellow people of Hoffman Estates tonight and Saturday.
