Using her resources, Senior Leila Solorzano is an aspiring Eagle Scout who worked hard to produce her own backpack drive. The goal of this backpack drive is to gather at least 50 gender neutral backpacks and supplies.

Each box is located in the department offices, and she hopes to get at least four backpacks full of supplies from each office. The supplies needed include folders, notebooks, mechanical pencils, pens, highlighters, notecards, etc.

By donating, people are helping the ESL population get the help they need. “The least I can do to help someone from another country is provide them with school supplies,” says Solorzano.

Having things like our Eagle Scouts and Hawks Nest really push students to create helpful opportunities for people in need.

“I have to give credit to the Hawks Nest. They are very selfless people because not a lot of people know that they use their own money and time to help people out,” said Solorzano.

Solorzano has always liked to help people. “I’ve always loved the idea of helping people, and I think it’s more the feeling I get when I help people in need,” she said.

The backpack drive began October 17 and will run through November 22.
