Creating a successful team isn’t easy. Success stems from hard work, grit, and consistency. The Hoffman Estates High School Chess Team has had an extraordinary season so far. On October 1st, they made history by defeating Barrington—a powerhouse they hadn’t bested in over two decades.
The triumph wasn’t just luck. “We’ve had a lot of guys on our team preparing both inside and outside of school,” said Head Coach Patrick Swanson. “The work people have put in to get better is what it came down to.”
This dedication, both in and out of official practice, set Hoffman up for a stellar performance against Barrington, where every player brought their A-game. Hoffman’s team depth has also been a game-changer this season, allowing them to rotate players without sacrificing quality.
“We know we have a solid team, and it will give us confidence that we can play a number of different kids in our lineup and still be successful,” Swanson said, adding that they hadn’t repeated a lineup yet this season thanks to the team’s strong turnout.
For Hoffman, this means better chances at securing high seeds in conference, sectionals, and potentially state if their momentum continues.
For team member Hansen Du, the victory felt monumental. “This win definitely means a lot since they are a very tough school,” Du said, expressing his excitement for Hoffman’s potential moving forward. He sees the Barrington win as a launchpad for further accomplishments, both during this season and in the years to come.
The team’s captain, Vincent Klugs, emphasized that preparation and a winning mentality were key. “We played to win—not to avoid losing,” he said.
Klugs, who recently returned from Germany to lead as Board 1, held team sessions to address common mistakes and hone skills. The outcome was clear: a decisive win, not merely a close match. “This victory has elevated Hoffman’s chess team in the local community. It signals that we’re a serious threat,” he said.
The team’s strength was apparent from the outset, with Freshman Kannan Srinivasan clinching an early game in just ten minutes—a rarity in matches that often stretch to two hours.
“That first win gave much-needed motivation,” Du said, crediting Srinivasan’s swift victory with setting the tone for the day.
For Swanson and his players, this win isn’t the end goal but a powerful beginning. “We’re looking to use the momentum to secure top finishes at the two Saturday tournaments we’ll attend,” Swanson added. With Hersey next on their schedule, Hoffman knows they must stay focused week by week.
With their historic win against Barrington, the Hoffman Estates Chess Team has proven they’re a formidable force. The victory has sparked a new standard and sense of confidence within the team. As Klugs put it, “The biggest takeaway from this match is the importance of a strong mentality. This will lead to more wins.”
As they continue the season, Hoffman’s players know they must remain sharp and grounded. For now, they’re enjoying a well-earned moment in the spotlight, bringing new respect and pride to their chess program.
