In case you missed it on Friday, November 13, 2015, Hoffman Estates High School had its yearly fundraising assembly to encourage staff and students to donate food for the annual food drive. Donations in the form of canned food can be made right outside of the auditorium.

For the HU, HU, HUGE food drive this year, J.P. Moore, special education department, shared his goal with staff and students. He said “the most our school has ever raised was in 2012 was about 12,000 food items.” If the students were able to raise that many items back then, he told the students he believes they can beat that goal this year.

He set the goal to 13,000 food items. After the Moore motivated the crowd to get serious about donating even just one or two cans of food, he rewarded everyone with a fun and engaging surprise. Faculty members squared off against students in a basketball game.

The referees of this game were head Hawk, Principal Jim Britton, and Luke Yanule, head coach of the boys basketball team.

The Hoffman faculty was leading over the students 7-0, with only 5 minutes into the game, at which time the half-time buzzer rang.

The students had underestimated the teachers. Their basketball skills were actually really good. They could not believe the teachers were actually beating them. The third and fourth quarter also turned out to be a piece of cake for the faculty, and they ended up winning 22-11. In the end, the score was less important than the comradery on the court and the enjoyment of the crowd.
